About

The Huddersfield Church of Christ is an inclusive and diverse community of Christians connected by faith that calls us to build a just world for all. Our ministries advocate at a national and global level, but our roots are planted firmly in our local churches in communities like yours.

Our Community

Our Story

As believers from diverse backgrounds, countries, and communities, we unite under the banner of Christ, setting aside our differences to fulfill His purpose. Many of us have been blessed to worship and fellowship with congregations like Morley Church of Christ, Leeds Central Church of Christ, and Nottingham Church of Christ over the years. Although we reside across West Yorkshire—a county established in 1974 with an area of 2,029 km² (783 sq mi) and a population of 2.3 million, making it the fourth-largest ceremonial county by population—it currently has only two congregations: Morley Church of Christ and Leeds Central Church of Christ. Considering the size and significance of this county, we believe it is time to expand and add a third congregation, with the hope that, with God’s help, we will continue to grow in the future.

Answering this call, we have established a new congregation in Huddersfield. On the 3rd of December, 2023, we held our first worship service and fellowship as the Huddersfield Church of Christ. It was a truly blessed gathering, where we felt the Shekinah—the manifest presence of God—powerfully among us. This initiative, supported by the grace of God, marks just the beginning as we seek more opportunities to plant additional congregations, faithfully responding to Christ's command to "go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature" (Mark 16:15; Matthew 28:19).

The mission of Huddersfield Church of Christ in Huddersfield City, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom, is the same mission Jesus gave to His followers: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19). We fulfil this mission by sharing the love of Christ with others, serving our community with compassion, and opening doors that allow us to proclaim the message of forgiveness, hope, and salvation through Jesus Christ. We give of ourselves and our resources to support the spread of the gospel both locally and globally.

As a church, we are committed to raising, training, and empowering our members to live godly lives and actively participate in this mission. Guided by the words of the apostle Paul, “Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!” (1 Corinthians 9:16), we remain dedicated to the calling of Christ in every aspect of our lives

The New Testament

The New Testament provides a vivid and timeless portrait of the church as it was guided by the Lord’s apostles. The church’s origins are divine, and it remains under the supreme authority of Christ. Shouldn’t this be the standard for us today—the pure and simple church of Christ?

It is through the New Testament that we truly understand the essence of the church of Christ. We are reminded that the church is described as the eternal purpose of God (Ephesians 3:9-11), highlighting its profound importance. Therefore, it is essential that we seek our education and direction solely from the teachings of the New Testament, avoiding the shifting ideas of men.

The New Testament not only teaches us what the church was but also what it is meant to be today, according to God's perfect and unchanging plan. In prophecy and in practice, the church of Christ reflects divine will, and it is our responsibility to ensure that it remains faithful to its original blueprint.

As we work to establish and grow congregations, our mission is to uphold this divine standard, fostering communities firmly rooted in the teachings of the New Testament and embodying the unity, purpose, and authority that Christ intended for His church.

What We Believe

In trying to summarize the things we believe, there are two dangers. First, there is the danger that some will take the statement of beliefs as a creed rather than going to the true source of doctrine, the Bible. Second, there is the danger that we might omit something important. That said, we have prayerfully drafted this list of beliefs commonly held by the members of the Church of Christ, Huddersfield.

First, that there is a sovereign God who spoke the universe into existence, and that we owe Him our obedience.  (Acts 17:24)

That God’s word is the only absolute source of truth. (John 17:17).

That God has given man the ability to choose between good and evil.

That we have not inherited Adam’s sin, but we have inherited the consequences of Adam’s sin.

That we are saved by Christ’s atoning blood. (1 Peter 1:19, 20)

That although we can do nothing to earn our salvation, God has set conditions we must abide by in order to be saved  (1 Peter 1:22)

That these conditions are:

Believe that Jesus is the son of God (John 3:17,18)

Repent of our sins (Acts 2:38)

Confess (acknowledge) Jesus as the Son of God (Matthew 10:32)

Be baptized (Acts 22:16)

That a child of God can fall from the grace (2 Peter 3:17).

That the New Testament has given us God’s pattern for the organization, work, and worship of the church.

If you are searching for a church home, or if you just have questions about our beliefs or the biblical doctrine on which we base them, you are always welcome to attend our Sunday or Wednesday worship services, or to contact our church office for more information.
